Lorex Security Camera Troubleshooting – How to Fix Common Issues

When it comes to security systems, I always refer people to Lorex devices. I do so as those systems are reliable and easy to handle. The Lorex security camera troubleshooting is easy to follow and anyone can do it.

However, when you don’t know anything about those systems, it can be difficult to fix issues and handle problems by yourself. Besides that, if you have one Lorex device, you may know how hard is to get in contact with the technical support department for a replacement or simple questions about the unit.

That said, in this article, I will be sharing with you all the information about troubleshooting for old devices. I will do that as most of those systems are out of warranty, which can result in a lack of support from the Lorex technical department.

Without further ado, let’s get into one of the most common issues with the LHV devices.

What Are The Common Issues With The Cameras?

Lorex Security Camera Troubleshooting Lorex Security Camera TroubleshootingLorex Security Camera Troubleshooting

The LHV devices are DVR (digital video recorders) meaning the cameras for those units need to have power and video cables to work. The cable for DVRs’ are RG59 with two connections, one for video and the other for power.

The system bundle will come with one power adapter for the system and one for the cameras. The one for the cameras will have a splitter for 4 or 8 of them, so you don’t have to connect the camera by camera with a single power adapter. That said, having a power adapter splitter like the ones above will allow people to connect multiple cameras without buying two or three power bars to connect eight power adapters.

Therefore, Lorex created the splitter power adapter to allow customers to easily connect multiple cameras to one single power outlet. This feature will help you to have fewer cables and effortless experience when installing the system.

However, the problems will come when the power supply fails, and all the cameras go off. This issue is not related to the recorder, it will be the power adapter that stopped working.

What you can do to ensure the issues is the adapter will be a swap of the power supplies. You can change the power adapter for the cameras with the one for the unit, so you will know the problem is the adapter and not the cameras.

Lorex Security Camera TroubleshootingLorex Security Camera TroubleshootingLorex Security Camera Troubleshooting

So, don’t think about replacing the unit right away as it can cost you around 200 dollars and it won’t fix the issue. Besides that, you can get a 12 dollars power supply with the same specs as the faulty adapter. That way, you will have your cameras back because I can assure you that on 90% of the cases the issue is related to a faulty power supply. I will leave the adapters on the link below in case you need one compatible.

Click here to get 4 in 1 adapter

Click here to get 8 in 1 adapter

That would be about power issues with cameras that are not showing on the screen. Now, if you have only one camera or two cameras that are not working, you may need to verify power first, then the video cable. Often, you can swap ports on the back of the DVR to check if the problem is the system.

After that, if the camera doesn’t work in a different port, you can try to check power. One way to check power is by looking at the camera at night time, so you can verify the infrared red lights around the lens on the camera, which means it is receiving power and is working.

Then, the last step will be to verify the power cable. In this case, you can take the camera down and put the camera in a different place where you have a working camera. That said, it will tell you if the video cable on the camera is damage.

You can check my article about BNC cameras, you will find all the necessary information about those cameras and more advanced troubleshooting.

What Are The Common Issues With the Unit?

Lorex Security Camera Troubleshooting

The DVR can be trouble if you don’t know how to manage some simple situations. You can fix issues just by changing adapters, as well as with the cameras, or by running a factory reset on the unit.

One of the most common issues with LHV models is the HDD not being recognized. You can fix the issue by running a factory reset on the DVR. You can do so by following the steps described below.

  1. Right anywhere on the screen, and go to the main menu.
  2. Then, enter your password and click on the hammer and screwdriver icon.
  3. Once there, you will choose the option settings.
  4. Under Settings on the left side, you will find an option that says default.
  5. On default, check the box that says factory default.
  6. In the end, hit apply and ok, so the system, will restart.

Lorex Security Camera Troubleshooting

Once you finish, if the system is still not recognizing the HDD, you can try with a new power adapter. Usually, Lorex adapters tend to fail over time, so you can fix the issue by replacing the power supply for the unit. However, if that doesn’t fix the issue, the problem will be the motherboard, and you will have to replace the whole system so it can record again.

Other issues that you can find with those Lorex DVRs’ will be a unit not turning on. In this case, the only thing you can try is a different power supply. You can test the one for the cameras on the system; even though that adapter can turn the unit on, it may not be enough for the 16 channels DVRs, so you will need to get a brand new adapter to check if that’s the issue.

That said, it is better to get a new adapter than paying a lot of money for a new system when the one you have will work with a new adapter. This issue is common and can be easily fixed with a new adapter.

At last, we have a system rebooting. In this case, three things can be happening:

  1. The system is overheating as the fan is no longer working.
  2. The power adapter is not sending enough voltage for the system to work.
  3. Something on the motherboard is damaged.

For the first issue, you can click on the link below and follow the steps to clean the fan on the system. It is something easy to do that can help you avoid buying a new system.

CLICK HERE TO CHECK HOW TO CLEAN THE FAN

After you clean the fan, try turning on the system and check if the system works properly. If not, check if you are still under warranty and call technical support to get a replacement. Otherwise, I will recommend you to get a new system.

Most of the new series will work the old BNC cameras as the use the same connection. You can get one of the systems below, they will work with older cameras.

On the second issue, you may need to get a new power adapter. Before that, you can try by testing the adapter for the cameras on the system to make sure that it is the real problem.

Finally, we have the motherboard issues, if the system is rebooting often, and you already tried all the troubleshooting described above, you will need to buy a new system. However, check if you are on a warranty.

REMINDER. The Lorex warranty period is 2 years since the date of purchase. The warranty will cover all the products that came in the bundle. Keep in mind that you need to have the proof of purchase or the receipt from where you buy it. If you get it from the Lorex website, you should have the order number ready.

Conclusion

Lorex Security Camera System

LHV units are reliable and trustable. Lorex has made systems that anyone can handle, and install you don’t need to get an installer that can cost you a fortune to do the process for you.

I made this article as most of the LHV units are old ones and will be out of warranty. It can take a lot of time for you to get in contact with the technical support department to tell you the same as I just shared in this article.

As you see, the troubleshooting is simple which allows you to do it by your self without any problem. However, those units are old ones, so if you have the opportunity to change it, it will be better for you as you will get an updated unit that will work with the latest Lorex Apps and Softwares. You can check some of my reviews below about the latest Lorex units.

  2. Hello, I have a Lorex 6 camera D861B series. Installed on 2 android phones and working OK. On the box I use the HDMI cable provided. Everything was working great and we are happy with product. While trying to clear up the night images I changed the resolution higher than 1080p TV is capable of and rebooted box as directed. Now the TV does not recognize the lorex box. Phones still work OK. Is there a factory reset for box other than onscreen that I can’t see or truning off and unplugging?

    1. Hello allen,

You can try just by pressing the only middle button that you have on the NVR for around 10 seconds. That should reset the resolution on the TV and go back to the previous 1080p.

If it does not work let us know.

On my monitor i get logo for lorex. And after 40 seconds i have no pictures.. its as if the unit won’t fully boot up..
What do you think is wrong

    1. Hello Chandler,

      Thank you for contacting us.

In this case, you must follow the following steps:

      1) Check the power supply, make sure you don’t have the unit connected to a junction box or power bar, it has to be connected directly into the power outlet.

      2) The N882 is a high-definition system, if you are trying to see the unit from a low-resolution display, you might need to change the display to a higher resolution one

      3) If not successful with the steps above, I will recommend you to contact Lorex Technical support for further assistance, as seems there’s something wrong with the unit

  16. Hello, Today I went to help my aunt. Her device is not getting past the logo and reboots. I tried unplugging all the cameras and rebooting. I changed the outlets to see if it was a power source problem. I also unplugged the hard drive and turned it on to see if it will load past the logo. We don’t even get the word welcome once you see the LOREX logo. She bought it from Costco in October of 2021. Support was unavailable today. I then tried to use the app thinking maybe with the wired network I can use a menu option to upgrade firmware, but still without it Properly loading, it doesn’t give us the option even in the app. All cameras state that they are offline. We have a 6-camera set up. I’m thinking maybe just go with a “nest unit” or the “ring” this is a hardware device with DVR capabilities, so I thought more secure more strong and tough. I have the NEST myself and had it for over 8 years now and is more than pleased with it. So, yeah, I don’t know.

  17. I am curious if you have had others complain about the motion and person detection. I understand it is a common issue in the industry that the cameras don’t truly detect motion or people and often alert when a bush moves in the breeze or even when clouds moving cause shadows in the viewing area that result in alerts. I have a Lorex 4K Ultra HD Security NVR (N842 Series) with 5 cameras and they routinely alert when the wind blows a plant or shrub and sometimes even when I can’t see any discernible movement. I’ve tried using zones away from shrubs/plants and even setting the motion sensitivity to the lowest setting, but I still get false alerts all day long. I’ve turned off all motion detection so I don’t fill up the available storage with worthless 20 second video clips. Any ideas? Is this something Lorex can fix with upgraded software?

  19. Hi Andy, I was looking at the motion sensitivity on the app that only goes from 1-5 but I now see in the manual where you can set the camera sensitivity and threshold. I’ve changed it to 80/20 and will monitor the results. Thanks for the tip!

  20. Hi Andy,

After changing it to 80/20 I am still getting a ton of false alerts. The Lorex manual doesn’t go into any detail about the camera sensitivity and threshold, can you provide any additional info? I guess I’ll just keep trying to adjust the settings but it sure is annoying!
    Thanks,
    Jason

    1. Hello Jason

We are sorry to hear that.

Your issue is very common not just for Lorex cameras but also for Dahua and FLIR.

If you have this camera exposed to a location with a lot of movement, being honest it is much better to disable the alarm of that specific camera.

You have two options regarding adjustment for the camera:

Sensitivity: is a reference for the amount of movement that the camera requires to activate the buzzer. The higher the sensitivity, the easier it will be for the camera to detect objects.

Threshold: it is a reference to the number of pixels that the object must occupy in the camera image so that it detects movement. If the threshold is higher, large objects will trigger the alarm and the lower the threshold will trigger due to small objects,

According to the given information, all you can do is make some tests with different sensitivity and threshold configurations. If not successful with any of them, disabling the alarm is the solution.

      Lorex Specialist

      1. Thank you for the info Andy, the explanation on sensitivity and threshold is very helpful. I will play around with it and see what I can figure out but for now will leave the alerts off.

  21. Hi, Every year around fall my camera (ptz zoom) says on it, PTZTilt Fail. Everything else it says is fine. I triple checked all the connections and made sure the ptz camera fine wires were in their connections correctly. Before in 2018, Aug. and in aug. 2019 and in Aug, 2020, fixed the two thin wires, one was broken off. That made it work again. But now in 2021 it did not fix it. Same info on camera, wires taken out several times and put back in. Still does not work. What doi try now?

One of the cameras with the issue only gets someone that comes up to the front door and gets maybe 2 recordings a day. The other is on the side of the house and has not gotten no even 1 recording per day. Both of these have the solar panels on them are the ones we have issues with going to red in a very short time. The other side of the house does not have a solar panel and does not get any recordings but is still in the green for a charge. The driveway gets the most recordings. Is the solar panels suppose to keep them charged.

I installed a Lorex LVH210800, 8 CH 1080p HD CVI DVR just last week. This security system was bought by my uncle 5 yrs ago. I tried also to replace the cctv screen with different brand because last week the cctv screen and the TV were same brand but the issue still same. What do you think is the cause?

I get the error “Can’t find host network”. I did a factory reset as well as unplugging the NVR. After reboot it only finds the 2 working cameras. I can confirm that the other 6 have power (red infrared light at night glows). I also changed out the Ethernet cable that runs from the NVR to the modem bc it says those cameras are offline. So just trying everything I know to do. Any recommendations??

Check the buzzer of the cameras, it might be due to the motion (motion seems to be activating the buzzer), if the motion detection is disabled, I will recommend you to contact Lorex Techincal Support.

  33. Its not the buzzer i am referring to. Its the actual siren on the camera that is going off or should i say on. Its loud and goes off by it self. Thanks for your reply.

      1. Ok thanks. I tried. They said to unplug box. And reboot. I have several times over past year. No success. Thanks anyway. Had to try.

  34. Ok. So the lorex cloud app just all of a sudden now shows only 1 out of my 5 cameras. The other four show a black screen but with my personalized view name at the top of each field of black view. What happened and how do I fix it remotely?

  36. Hi… recently got a N882 NVR with LNE9252B & 9292B cameras. I’ve got them all set with Smart Detection enabled and Person & Vehicule enable (no motion enanled) and out of the 5 only 2 works well. The others do detect as I get a green S on the screen but it won’t record (red S). I also got the Schedule (under Storage) set for everyday (24hr) with Smart Motion enable. Any why it won’t do recording?

I see any sensivity/treshold setting for Smart Motion.

    1. did unplug the camera for reset, plus did a NVR restart, that didn’t fix anything.

  37. I recently purchased a second hand Lorex DVR D871B Series with 6 4k cameras. The DVR is registered to an earlier e-mail id. Also I don’t have the password for logging into main menu. Didn’t realize that this is so critical n the seller didn’t impart this knowledge to me. This won’t allow me to register the system on the app. Is there a way to bypass this problem?

I have 4 cameras and 3 of them are working fine, But a doorbell cam is not working properly. First, there was no recording at all meaning a black time bar on Lorex Cloud Playback. But now it has a green bar which means there is recording but nothing is being played in playback. Any ideas?

  43. So I have a lorex N844A8-48B6. It works great but the last few days I go to check events on my mobile app and it say no recording also under events I have a event with a pic of an SD card with an exclamation and it says device storage corrupted. Why is it doing that? How do I fix it??

    1. Hello [],

      Thank you for contacting us.

      Thanks for the information.

For general maintenance, it is recommended to delete all the recordings and start fresh every six months, in this case to fix this you need to format the hardrive and start over.

  48. I have a Lorex wireless system. I recently purchased solar panels for two of the cameras. I plug them in and it works, charging till full. Then the camera will just start doing this double “buzz buzz” sound every few minutes. The screen shows it going from charging to full battery. I was told I could have these plugged in at all times, but it seems like it will buzz once fully charged (which doesn’t happen with the plug in charger.) I called Lorex and they said the cameras can’t make that sound…well I can tell you that so far, two of them do and I don’t know why. Help? L42481. I have 4 cameras total.

  51. I just purchased two solar panels from Lorex. I installed the first one and it appears to be working fine. The second one not so good. When you change the battery you get a buzz sound. When I connected the solar panel with a fully charged battery I got the buzz. But then again about 2 minutes later I got another buzz and every 2 to 3 minutes after that I kept on getting a buzz. Cameras are U424AA-Z and the solar panel’s were correct for those camera’s.

One mc2232 camera on my lorex lh030400 wireless security system failed and I am replacing with an identical mc2232 but pushing the pairing button on the back of the camera does not cause it to pair up. 58. Quick question. I have a LNK 7108A DVR unit at our beach house. The power goes out from time to time in our neighborhood. When the power comes back on, my unit does not reboot. The blue LED (power) light comes on but not the red (HDD) light. The only way to get it to reboot is to the flip the on/off switch on the back of the unit which isn’t practical since I’m usually not there. Is there a fix for this issue? Thx.

  59. Quick question. My system is an older model (LNK7108A) 4K NVR with seven LKB343 wired cameras. From time to time we have power outages. When the power comes back on the system will not reboot without turning the on/off switch on the back of the NVR. Thoughts? Thx.
